EUROPEAN CO-OPERATION - ITALY

Albergo in via dei matti numero 0 is an Italian National Partnership with the aim of strengthening and specialising in the development of type b) social co-operatives, an important and very innovative part of the well developed Italian Third Sector.

Social co-operatives are workers owned co-operatives with the aim of creating decent work for their members through the economic and cultural sustainable development of the local environment. It is very important that at least 30% of the working members are women and men with experience of mental illness, disabilities, prison, drug addiction or other kinds of exclusion.
In Italy there are more than 2000 social co-operatives. More than 50.000 women and men are members of those cooperatives which are active in very different economic sectors.
Recently the question of specialisation has become more and more important.

Albergo in via dei matti numero 0 will create a Consortium in order to manage a Hotel chain franchise.

There are some positive experiences where social co-operatives manage hotels or restaurants. We will look to these examples and try to replicate them on a larger scale in Italy and on a European level.
