EUROPEAN CO-OPERATION - SWEDEN
Vagen Ut! EXIT! - From prison to social co-operative.
People who are released after serving a prison sentence find it difficult to get work and they often return to crime and/or drug addiction.
EXIT! is a partnership that builds on co-operation between the social economy, the public sector and private industry to create new ways for people with experience of drug addiction and/or crime to find routes to employment and self-sufficiency.
The aim is to create a network of different social co-operatives.
Driving forces behind this process of change are:
- VÄVSTUGAN: drop-in center for women that have experience of drug addiction and/or crime.
- KRIS: a self-help organization for people with a criminal record.
- ATELJE TRÄDET: a handicrafts workshop for women, run by the foundation Half Way House.
- BRYGGAN: a self-help organization for people with experience of drugs and/or crime. The association especially aims to support the children of those admitted.
Other members in the development partnership who contribute their skills and knowledge to support this work are:
The Co-operative Development Agency and the Voluntary Center of Gothenburg, the City Administration Office and the Unit for Voluntary Social work in the City of Gothenburg, Prison and Probation Services, the County Employment Board, the Regional Social Insurance Office and Gothenburg University.
